How TN Nursery turns abandoned carts into recovered sales with Kai

An abandoned cart is a customer who already decided. They chose the plant, they got as far as checkout, and then something stopped them. Most e-commerce teams send an email, maybe two, and write off the rest. The revenue does not announce itself as lost; it simply never arrives.

TN Nursery, one of the largest online plant nurseries in the United States, pointed an AI agent at that gap instead. When a cart is abandoned in Shopify, Kai reaches out within moments, by call, SMS, chat and voicemail. About half of the recovery calls it connects end in a sale. The same agent handles the support queue, resolving 94% of conversations across chat and email without a person.

The customer

TN Nursery ships trees, shrubs and perennials to gardeners nationwide from its Shopify store. At that scale two things happen constantly: shoppers abandon carts at checkout, and customers ask questions, about orders, about shipping, and about how to care for something that is alive.

Both are revenue problems. A lost cart is lost revenue. A slow answer is a lost customer. Neither one scales by hiring more people, which is the position that makes an AI agent worth taking seriously rather than worth arguing about.

Job one: recover the cart

The moment Shopify records an abandonment, Kai starts outbound: a call, an SMS, a chat message, a voicemail if nobody picks up, carrying a personalised promo code and free shipping.

Two things make it work that an email sequence cannot. It is immediate, reaching the shopper while the decision is still fresh rather than the next morning. And it is a conversation, so a shopper who hesitated over shipping cost or planting season gets that answered on the spot instead of being asked to click back into a checkout they already left.

51% of the AI recovery calls converted to a sale, and roughly one in seven abandoned carts came back across the whole population, including the shoppers who never answered anything. For carts that were, by any normal accounting, already gone, that is a recovery rate no email flow gets near.

Job two: answer everyone else

The same agent runs the support queue through the Zendesk integration, resolving order, shipping and plant-care questions on its own and escalating only what genuinely needs a person.

  • 94% of support conversations handled by AI, across chat and email.
  • About 6% escalated to a human, which is where the interesting problems now go.
  • 24/7, with no hold times and no night shift, at peak season and at midnight alike.

The escalation rate is the number to watch rather than the deflection rate. Six percent reaching a person is only a good outcome if those six percent are the cases that should reach one, and that is what typing and escalation rules decide. Deflection on its own is easy and usually means customers gave up.

Why it matters

The AI is on the revenue line, not just the cost line. Most AI support projects are justified by tickets deflected. This one brings back sales that were already lost, which is a different conversation with a finance team: not what the support desk saves, but what it returns.

The team scales without the headcount. Thousands of calls, chats and emails run in parallel, so peak season does not need seasonal hiring and midnight gets the same service as midday.

People get the work worth doing. With the routine questions answered, the human team spends its day on the complicated few instead of retyping shipping timelines.

If you run a store

Cart abandonment is not a marketing problem to be solved with a better email. It is a conversation nobody is having at the moment the customer is still deciding. Most stores cannot staff that, which is exactly why an agent that calls, texts and chats within moments of the abandonment recovers revenue that no sequence was reaching.

Kai plugs into Shopify and your help desk to do both halves: win back the carts, and handle service at scale. Book a demo and we will look at your own abandonment volume and what a recovery flow would return.
